When combing and detangling a child’s hair, it's important to choose the right tool for the job. Some combs and brushes can actually make tangles worse and cause irreversible damage. We’ve rounded up our favorite styling tools that remove tangles and snarls gently and without discomfort. Start with do+little's Shiny Happy Leave-In Detangling Milk, and they'll take care of the rest.
Don’t just use any old comb when removing tangles from your child’s hair. Instead, choose a quality wide-tooth comb. This style of comb has more space between each tooth compared with a regular comb which has thin teeth that are close together. Try the wide-tooth comb to gently separate tangles without hair breakage or pain. This is especially important when hair is wet or extra-tangled, as it is more prone to damage. Our favorite combs for detangling are the Mason-Pearson Rake Comb or The Wet Comb™.
Damp hair is more prone to damage and breakage, so it must be treated gently. We love the WetBrush for its ability to glide through damp hair, gently removing tangles and knots along the way. The mini size is especially nice for small children to use themselves. We suggest buying both sizes to use as part of your child’s self-care routine.
This ingenious invention can be used on wet or dry hair. We recommend it to refresh dry hair that has been slept on overnight, along with a few spritzes of our Shiny Happy leave-in product. The Tangle Teezer has two different lengths of bristle--one to smooth and the other to flex and detangle comfortably. Tangle Teezer’s Compact Styler is the perfect size for children; they also make the Magic Flowerpot specifically for kids.
Investing in a quality boar-bristle brush is a great way to maintain tangle-free hair. Use it daily on dry hair. Boar bristles have been used in hairbrushes for over a century, and are recommended to distribute the scalp’s natural oils evenly through the hair, as well as add shine and reduce frizz. While pricey, we suggest the classic Mason-Pearson line of brushes, as they are top-quality and will literally last a lifetime with proper care. They make child-size version of their popular “Pocket Brush" as well as one for fine hair and sensitive scalps.
